Compass Children’s Homes

Project brief

Triangle Fire were contracted by Compass Children’s Home to  complete remedial works following a fire survey.

A recent fire assessment at Compass Children’s Home, Westcliff, identified a number of issues, we were contracted by Compass to resolve the issues that were highlighted:

  • Gaps between the doors and frames: Our team adjusted the doors and self-closers to close up the gaps to the head and jambs, and installed concealed drop down seals to the bottoms of the doors, completely sealing the gap at the bottoms of the door to block the passing of smoke in event of a fire.
  • Self-closing fire doors: Fire Doors must be self-closing in order to be fully compliant, but staff requested that office and dining room doors could be help open, so in turn we installed Dorgard’s to these doors – a compliant hold open device which in the event of a fire alarm activation, will release the door allowing it to fully close to protect the occupants and the building.
  • Missing intumescent strips: The strips play a huge roll in a compliant fire door. The brush within the strip blocks the passing of smoke and when activated by heat, the strip itself will swell up, blocking both the fire and smoke to protect life and property for a minimum of 30 minutes (depending on the type of door set installed FD30 – 30 minutes, FD60 – 60 minutes). All missing/ damaged intumescent were replaced accordingly.
  • Electrical cupboard under stairs: As all the electrical supplying the building were situated in a cupboard underneath the staircase, this needed to be compartmented. We did this by lining the walls and ceilings with 15mm fire rated plasterboard and sealing all corners and joints with an appropriate intumescent acrylic sealant.

Following the works, we received a glowing reference from the Manager of the Children’s Home:

I was asked as a registered manager to source a reliable fire systems service to complete some remedial work on the home after having a fire survey and had Triangle Fire Systems recommended to me.

From the very first interaction with Harry from Triangle Fire Systems I found him to be professional, knowledgeable and mindful of how we should complete the works considering it was in a working children’s environment. Harry completed the works to a high standard and any communication necessary was informative and timely.

More recently we have asked Harry’s advice on some further works to be completed and due to his impressive knowledge base and professional manner the Facilities Manager for Compass, has asked Harry to oversee all remedial works and fire door checks on a regular basis at all the Compass Children’s Homes in the East Region. Thank you Harry, you have been great to work alongside and very much appreciated. I’m sure Triangle  Fire Systems  value you greatly as one of their trusted employees.’

We look forward to working with Compass on further works across their homes.
